Bringing a New Museum Concept to Life

The Challenge: Since its inception in 1998, the Lux Art Institute has faced two primary communications challenges: convey the Lux concept—which lacks precedence in the art world—and create a strong presence for an institution that currently operates without a physical location.

The Solution: For more than six years, we have played an important role in the evolution of Lux, an innovative museum under development in North San Diego County. Led by John Ball, a founding board member and long-term strategic partner, the MiresBall team has promoted Lux through a series of expressive materials—including a seasonal newsletter, growing website and documentary-style film—that create a vibrant sense of place and experience around the museum.

The Result: Lux has successfully completed a first phase of fundraising and generated substantial interest within the arts community—often garnering recognition for design excellence from the American Association of Museums.

“MiresBall has made a profound impact on the young institution that is Lux. From shaping all aspects of our public persona to material development to strategy sessions on how to build grassroots support, clearly MiresBall is a big part of what Lux has become and how the public perceives us. Moreover, Lux has received an unprecedented number of coveted American Association of Museums awards based on the efforts of MiresBall. This past year only two institutions in California received first-place recognition—Lux and the Getty. Need I say more?”
