New cross-border initiative strengthens the region’s creative workforce through funding, research, and professional development.
Backed by a coalition of civic and philanthropic partners, Artists Count: San Diego + Tijuana directs $1.3 million in support to artists while building a deeper understanding of the conditions shaping creative work across the binational region. The initiative reinforces the role artists play as essential contributors to cultural and economic life.
MiresBall developed the Artists Count brand identity and digital platform, creating a flexible system designed to expand alongside the program—from research focused on the creative economy to the selection of 40 artists who will receive funding to produce new work.
The identity is intentionally high-contrast and reductive: a black-and-white visual system built for clarity, flexibility, and impact across both digital and print applications. Rather than relying on decorative elements, the design emphasizes typography, scale, and composition, leaving space for art and artists to remain at the forefront.
At the heart of the system is a logo designed to function less like a fixed mark and more like a frame that showcases the diversity of creative practice across the region.
The website extends this thinking into a fluid but functional digital experience that prioritizes accessibility, clarity, and ease of navigation for artists engaging with funding opportunities and research, while nodding to a broad spectrum of voices and disciplines through its ever-changing typography.
Ultimately, the Artists Count identity is a reminder that strong design systems don’t compete with their content—they create the conditions for it to be seen, understood, and valued.
