Design for innovative museum wins prestigious Communication Arts award

Brand identity for the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA) selected for the 13th typography competition.

Communication Arts (CA) is the premier publication for people in the creative community. Now in its 64th year, the journal promotes the highest professional standards for the field.

The ICA project was selected for the magazine’s 13th annual typography competition by an international jury in one of the most exclusive major creative competitions in the world. With 1,112 entries submitted to the competition, ours was among 137 projects awarded.

The selected projects are reproduced in Typography Annual 13, the January/February 2023 issue of CA, both in print and digital editions, and in the online gallery.

About the project

With a mission to present thought-provoking experimental work to a broader community, the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego (ICA/SD) needed an identity that would invite people into the art experience. Our solution uses an extra bold C to highlight the museum’s contemporaneity while creating a memorable mark at small sizes. A set of stylized alternate Cs emphasizes a dynamic, ever-changing programming philosophy. In headlines, the C becomes shorthand for the word see, reminding everyone there’s always something new to C at ICA/SD.
